Quick Tips For
Stopping SPAM
If you are getting heavy SPAM and viruses
then you're not alone. It's been suggested
that as much as 80% of internet-email
traffic on any given day is SPAM or viruses.
Reading through SPAM is a waste of your
time and it subjects you to potential
viruses, trojan horses, and sexual material
which can be quite offensive and also
security risk. Here are some tips on how
to win the SPAM war:
- Use so called throw-away email address
when posting to public news groups and
chat rooms and for your Yahoo or MS
Messenger Chat accounts. You can get
free email addresses at Yahoo, Hot Mail
and other places. Use your personal
ISP-provided email address only to communicate
with trusted sources. If you are an
AOL user then set up an additional email
account to use for public posting purposes.
When your free or spare email account
starts getting abused just close it
and open another.
- Take the time to set up different
email addresses for different purposes.
Have one for business communications,
another for personal and another one
for shopping online. That way you can
avoid the risk of exposing one e-mail
address to all of your contacts.
- If you run your own internet-website
then the chances are your
internet-hosting account also has
ability to create new email addresses.
These are addresses that will automatically
forward to your main address. If you
have that capability then use a unique
address for each web site or mailing
list that you choose to join. For example,
if your site name is abc.com and you
decide to join the mailing list located
at xyz.com, you would join using the
address xyz@abc.com. If you start getting
SPAM to this address then you know that
the people who run xyz.com are responsible.
You can complain to them and their ISP
and you can easily delete that email
address.
- Don't list your email address on
your own web site in plain html or as
a link to a contact form. Spammers use
automated robots to capture these addresses
and add them to SPAM databases. Instead
use an email cloaking script whenever
you need to show your email address.
You can search at Google.com using the
phrase "email cloaking" and come up
with a lot of options. Just pick the
one that works best for your particular
needs.
- Do not buy anything from a company
that sends you SPAM. Not only might
the company or offer be a scam but you
are jumping right into the fire by letting
spammers know that your email address
is active and that you buy from spammers.
Your address will be sold to thousands
of other spammers.
- Never reply to a spammer or click
the "remove my address" link. That only
lets them know your address is good.
- If your email service or email client
comes with SPAM filters use them.
- You might want to think about subscribing
to a SPAM prevention service. Search
on Google.com for "SPAM prevention service"
and review your options. Make sure your
home and business computers are running
anti-spyware
programs to defeat spybot spyware invasive
programs, which are major security and
online-privacy risk!
Following these simple tips could cut
your SPAM down by as much as 90%. Wouldn't
that be great!
Protect Your Most Vital Business Asset
with good PC Security Software
Homeland security, airport security,
Internet security – these days we’re literally
inundated with a need to protect ourselves
and our property from the non-stop bombardment
of potentially damaging attacks by unknown
sources and entities lurking somewhere
out there.
This is the reality of the world in
which we live today. We can’t just lock
ourselves up in our homes and wish the
problems go away. Life must go on. What
we’ve got to do is fight back. And we
have to protect ourselves using the best
possible methods, including using WGU
TV website: AbuseGov!
which is a unique virus fighting, anti-spyware
and spam defeating place you should visit
now.
Fortunately, internet-security is big
business these days. There really is no
end to the security options that are available
on the free market. And when it comes
to protecting your computer system, your
protection options and extent are limited
only by the balance in your bank checking
account.
So much of our non-sleep time is spent
on the computer. Think about your own
situation. If you’re running a small business,
especially when you’re just starting out,
the PC often is your only other partner
in the office. You entrust this partner
with every crucial component of your business
– your accounting, your inventory, your
CRM, your communication, your vital documents,
your sales and marketing information,
your project management, even your on-line
store.
You’re handing off quite a lot of responsibility
to this partner. Granted, it’s a machine,
and it’s got the internal capacity to
handle such an enormous responsibility.
But even the most powerful of personal
computers is vulnerable if it’s not given
the protection it needs to survive in
this world of never-ending assault.
Viruses, hackers, SPAM, pop-ups, Trojans
and more are out there lurking, waiting
to bring each and every unprotected computer
system to its knees. And you might not
realize this, but there are programs out
there that can log your keystrokes. Don’t
understand the implications of this? Well,
every time you enter your login name,
your passwords, your credit card numbers,
loggers capture and store the keystroke
sequence. If you ever find unauthorized
transactions on your credit cards, bank,
or PayPal acount, your account numbers might
have been stolen by someone using a keystroke logger.
Have you provided your business partner
with the protection it needs to withstand
this type of daily attack? You better
hope your answer is yes. Otherwise, you’re
playing a dangerous game of Russian Roulette.
A good Internet security system will
keep your business and personal data safe.
It will thwart viruses before they have
an opportunity to wreak havoc on your
computers. It will guard against unauthorized
users, a.k.a. hackers and phishers – those
whose sole purpose is to steal your identity.
It will be able to recognize and filter
out SPAM. And those annoying pop-up ads?
They’ll be blocked before they even have
a chance to show their ugly heads.
When you need even more protection,
it’s available, too. Encrypt your instant
messages and keep Instant Messaging spam,
or SPIM, at bay. Internet security software
can also provide you will a listing of
all web contacts, inbound as well as outbound,
and will notify you of instances of unauthorized
access. Plus, it can filter e-mail scripts
and perform other tasks to help your computer
system hide from Internet scanners.
So, if you’ve not done so already, it’s
time you purchase internet-security software
for your computer. Be concerned about
secure
video too, especially if you do online-video/audio
presentations.
Register your security software so you
get upgrades when they are available.
But don’t get too comfortable. Remember,
even the most advanced Internet security
suite can only guard against known enemies.
And new ways of assaulting your computer
are being conceived every day. And that’s
the reality of the world in which we live.
